Letters of Love is a club with a mission to spread love and support to veterans, sick children, and others in need. Membership in the club at Prior Lake High School has nearly doubled this year, making it possible to send more letters than ever before.
Kicking off the school year can feel disorganized, but students in Letters of Love worked over the summer to advertise their club to other students. They posted to their Instagram page in August and received more applicants than they anticipated.
One of the Letters of Love Presidents, Gabi Adams, has been a part of Letters of Love since her sophomore year. Along with Letters of Love, she manages many other extra curricular activities.
“Letters of Love is a lot different from other high school clubs because of its connection to the real world,” Gabi said.
Letters Of Love contributors help through volunteering and devoting time out of their morning to write letters.
At the end of each month, letters are sent to global corporations who help distribute them to different hospitals and organizations.
Their goal is to not only strengthen the bond of the community but also to inspire other individuals to spread kindness.
“Our number one goal is to make people feel inspired, loved, and feel a sense of belonging,” said Letters of Love member Olivia Hansen. “I want to be the reason a child smiles when they read our messages full of love and positivity. Our club directly involves helping children and there aren’t many high school clubs that impact younger individuals the way we do.”
For Letters of Love president Gabi, childhood cancer hits pretty close to home. Growing up, Gabi had a friend pass away as a result of a brain tumor.
“I felt connected to the mission of Letters of Love because these cards are going to children struggling with what my friend Emily went through,” Gabi said. “Watching one of my childhood friends battle cancer was one of the hardest things I’ve been through, and that motivates me to continue to support other children during their battle.”
This school year, the Letters of Love presidents are pushing their members to have better attendance. They communicate through the Group Me app regarding meetings, upcoming events, and due dates.
“We have a lot of people in our Group Me, but we would love for more people to get involved in our volunteering opportunities,” Gabi said.
Students are only required to attend one meeting each month, but the presidents would love to see individuals exceeding those expectations in the 2023-2024 school year.
They also want to become more active on social media to spread the optimism and hope Letters of Love has to offer.
“We are thrilled with the amount of participants we have gained this year, but we are always looking for more,” Gabi said.
