How do you spend a typical weekend? Do you normally sleep in or take the day off to relax? For many members of the Prior Lake community, that was not the case on Saturday, November 4. Over 300 Lakers of all ages came together to run (or walk) a 5K to show their support for acclaimed teacher and coach, Brad Bulver.
Mr. Bulver, a former special education teacher and golf coach at PLHS, was recently diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (commonly referred to as ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease that weakens the brain’s nerve cells and spinal cord. As a response to his heartbreaking condition, the people of Prior Lake couldn’t resist stepping in and expressing their gratitude for such a kind-hearted teacher, coach, and friend.
“The Bulvers have been overwhelmed with the generosity and support of Prior Lake/Savage and PLSAS schools,” said Mr. Carr, a close friend and former colleague of Bulvers. “Watching the 5K and various other fundraising efforts make me proud to be a part of the school community. We have wonderful colleagues and students who have given their time, effort, and money to help.”
The 5K event, put on by the National Honor Society and Junior Optimists Club at the high school, was a huge success. Runners, walkers, and volunteers alike felt joy knowing that their efforts were going toward a cause close to home. According to PLHS Assistant Activities Director Beth Fuller, they’re “still finalizing the donation amount, but the total will be over $11, 000 raised for the Bulver family.”
“Being able to encourage the runners and support Mr. Bulver all at the same time was so amazing,” exclaimed Lia Boles, a Junior Optimist member who spent her Saturday morning volunteering at the event.
After the 5K, a raffle and auction were hosted at Charlie’s on Prior. Even more people around the area attended, and many individuals decided to donate prizes. Fuller said, “The raffle/social gathering at Charlie’s raised over $16,000 with Prior Lake UPS matching donations. We can’t thank Traci Petschl and her Charlie’s crew enough for helping to host this event for Brad and his family — everyone truly came together to make this happen!”
Such generosity truly emphasizes what makes Prior Lake such a wonderful community.
