Influential.
That’s the best term to describe Prior Lake High School English teacher, Meghan Fulton.
During a normal day at Prior Lake High School, hundreds of teachers, administrators, and various other staff work hard to make PLHS a safe and fun environment, but one teacher goes above and beyond to make Prior Lake High School feel like home.
Meghan Fulton, an English teacher at Prior Lake for the past twelve years, shares her journey and the background of how she became an inspiration for all who’ve stepped into her classroom. Taking a deeper look into Mrs. Fulton’s life in and outside of the school, she is way more than just an English teacher.
Following high school, Mrs. Fulton earned her bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of Minnesota and her master’s degree in literacy education from Hamline University.
However, before beginning her teaching career, Mrs. Fulton was an admissions counselor for the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for five years.
“I would promote students to commit to the U of M and talk with them about their college journey,” Fulton said.
Prior Lake High School, being under her territory at the time, caught her eye as she was pursuing her admissions career.
“I loved college admissions counseling, but I was on the wrong side of the table at least in my perspective.”
Fulton realized she was often declining students instead of promoting their learning. This realization is what led to her teaching career. She has now been a teacher at PLHS for twelve years and plans to continue her work here and make a difference.
Fulton comes from a long line of teachers. Her parents, aunts, uncles, and other family members all have teaching careers. As any child would, you either want to follow in your parents’ footsteps or go a completely different direction.
“Being the rebel I am, I always thought growing up that I did not want to follow my parents and be an elementary-level educator,” Ms. Fulton said.
Her mom was a K-5 speech and language teacher, and her dad was a K-4 educator. She experienced different views on education during her childhood. Fulton’s biggest role models are her parents, as they have taught her all she knows.
As time went on and she experienced an admissions career, Mrs. Fulton realized that she had a love for teaching and ultimately decided to follow in her role models’ footsteps.
“Growing up, I saw the way that my parents truly loved their students and how much they cared about education.” This was a big factor in Mrs. Fulton’s decision to become a teacher.
English may not be everyone’s favorite subject, but for Ms. Fulton, it has been an all-time favorite for as long as she can remember.
“English has always been my go-to subject. I love reading, I love writing, I love talking about literature.” These are all characteristics that help make Meghan Fulton an amazing and passionate English teacher.
Meghan Fulton has made a difference in thousands of students’ lives and will continue to be a huge influence on thousands more.
