Congratulations to Prior Lake High School social studies teacher Matthew Helm who was recently awarded the VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award (grades 9-12). Established in 1999, the award recognizes the nation’s top teachers for their exceptional commitment to promoting civic responsibility, flag etiquette, and patriotism in the classroom.
This prestigious recognition began with Mr. Helm being nominated by members of the Prior Lake VFW Post 6208. He was first selected as their Post Teacher of the Year, then advanced to be named the 9-12 Teacher of the Year for the 2nd District, competing against nominees from 31 other posts.
Mr. Helm’s exceptional dedication and leadership earned him the top honor at the state level. His devotion to students, the PLSAS community, and the values he instills in his classroom make him truly deserving of this recognition.
Mr. Helm is the second PLHS social studies teacher to win a state-level award this school year.
Back in September, Ms. Rydell was honored at an awards luncheon for being named the Minnesota Council on Economic Education’s (MCEE) 2024 Educator of the Year for grades 9-12.
Ms. Rydell’s innovative approach to teaching economics empowers students to see its relevance in their daily lives, making complex concepts accessible and engaging. Her dedication to student learning and her ability to connect economics to real-world scenarios has earned her this prestigious award.
MCEE celebrates educators like Ms. Rydell for their impactful contributions to the future of Minnesota’s students.
Please join us in congratulating Mr. Helm and Ms. Rydell on these incredible honors!
