The Prior Lake High School wrestling team took 6th place at the team state tournament held at the Xcel Energy Center on Thursday, February 27th.
The Lakers took on a tough Stillwater squad in the first round, losing 52-15. Getting wins for the Lakers were sophomore Liam Collins (114), junior Zach Gabler (152), and senior Brock Zurn (285).
The Lakers then moved on to the consolation bracket, where they defeated Elk River by a score of 37-30. Securing wins were sophomore Rocco Mikolyzk (107), sophomore Dekai Brown (114), Gabler (152), senior John Graham (160), junior Charlie Nelson (172), senior Tommy Wycoff (189), and Zurn (285).
The win against Elk River propelled the Lakers into the consolation finals where they faced Bemidji, with the Lumberjacks prevailing 40-27. Wins for the Lakers included Brown (114), Collins (121), Gabler (152), Graham (160), and Zurn (285).
As a result of finishing 3-0 in the team tournament, Brock Zurn was named to the AAA All-tournament team.
Four Lakers, including Mikolyzk, Collins, Graham, and Zurn, then competed at the individual state tournament held at the Xcel on February 28 and March 1st. Zurn was the top place winner for the Lakers, securing a 3rd place finish, while Liam Collins finished in 6th place.
Also recognized at the state tournament was head coach Joe Block who was awarded the AAA Coach of the Year for the state of Minnesota. Assistant coach Jon Tolbert was also named as the section 2AAA assistant coach of the year.
