The Prior Lake Lakers had an exciting final home competition of the year Tuesday with their season-high score beating conference opponent Apple Valley/Eastview 143.625 to 137.2.
“We’ve been working really hard in the gym, building in some upgrades and cleaning up the skills we do have, and that hard work has paid off,” head coach Patrick Kloeckner said. “It was senior night tonight, with a perfect ending for Madeline Chappuis winning the all-around with a 37.0, now the third highest all-arounder in Prior Lake history.”
The meet started off on vault, led by senior standout Madeline Chappuis’ 9.2 pike Tsuk. “Maddie keeps getting stronger, it’s nice having her back (from injury) on all four events.”
Tying for second place on vault were two personal best scores of a 9.1 for Maya Hage and Sofia Vold, both coming from the co-op with Jordan High School. “Sof has been working on her full twisting Yurechenko on, and half off for years, and it’s nice to see that finally paying dividends.” Megan Althoff and Julia Carlson rounded out vault, both with season-high scores of 8.45 and 8.4, respectively.
Next was bars, where the Lakers achieved their season’s best team score of 35.65, just .025 away from the school bars record. Clare Draine’s winning score of 9.375 saw her near-perfect connection of a giant to bail along with her full twisting dismount. “We’ve had this bar routine in mind for Clare for 3 years now, and to see her determination pay off is every coach’s dream.”
Chappuis and Hage also had personal best scores of 8.95 and 8.9, both making new connections. “Maddie has been working on connecting her dismount, and Maya a clear hip to hand bail mount, maximizing their scores.” Gia Wilson and Julia Carlson contributed 8.425 and 7.7.
Madeline Chappuis continued her superb meet with another personal best and winning score of 9.425 on beam. “Beam has been our most inconsistent event this year, even though it is technically our best event,” Kloeckner said in reference to a few of his gymnasts falling. “Each fall takes .5 off the score. I think we just need some more numbers (of the skills) to really help them stick.
Clare Draine was second with a fall, but kept the rest of her routine clean to still garner a 9.1. Senior Anika Campbell stuck her beam routine for a personal best score of 8.9. “Anika is fighting an injury right now. I was glad she could compete beam on senior night, but I am hoping the next two weeks off will see her come back stronger than ever.” Wilson and Hage finished on beam with scores of 8.275 and 7.65.
Chappuis finished her final home meet of her career with an additional winning and personal best score of 9.425. “Our floor continues to get cleaner with better finishes, saving tenths that will really matter when it comes to sections.”
Draine and Hage added some more scoring punch with scores of 9.4 and 9.2 along with Taylor Bergman and Vold both finishing on the floor with scores of 8.4.
Prior Lake (3-1) takes two weeks off before traveling to Eagan on January 27.
