All Aboard the Spaceship Avalon in Passengers

Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) is a mechanic aboard the spaceship Avalon. The Avalon was on its way to a new planet, Homestead II, when it was struck by a meteor. All passengers and crew sleep for the majority of the journey in Hibernation pods, which pause homeostasis so they won’t age until they wake up.

The meteor strike causes many problems, the first being that it caused Preston’s pod to open 90 years too early. No one else is awake yet and after nearly a year of solitude, Preston nearly takes his own life.

But  — he sees a woman — played by Jennifer Lawrence.  He researches her using the Avalon databases and falls in love with her. Her name is Aurora Lane and she is a writer. His loneliness and depression make him consider waking her up, even though he knows it’s like murder since she’ll never live off of the spaceship ever again.

After months of internal struggle and debate, he gives up and opens her pod. At first, he doesn’t tell her that he did it, but she eventually figures it out. Furious, she avoids him until another one of the crew members wakes up and, together, the three of them attempt to fix the rest of the damage caused by the meteor. They must succeed in order to save over 5,000 passengers and crew aboard the Avalon.

Chris Pratt plays the main character, Jim Preston. He is also known for his work in Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Parks and Recreation. Pratt’s costar, Jennifer Lawrence, is also known for her role as Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games series and for her lead role in the movies Silver Linings Playbook and Joy.

This movie has gone both way with the critics. Some feel as though the movie was too short and didn’t have enough plot depth. On the other hand, many feel as though the actors and actresses made the movie amazing.

The movie teaches its audience that doing everything alone is impossible. Even the most independent people sometimes need a little love and communication to survive.
