Known for directing the films “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Tron,” “Twisters,” and “Oblivion,” Joseph Kosinski’s latest project, “F1 The Movie,” continues his legacy of movies with huge thrills and amazing storytelling.
Starring Brad Pitt, F1 received four 2026 Oscar nominations, winning for Best Sound. It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing.
The story begins in the 1990s when F1 race car driver Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) gets in a horrific accident, nearly ending his career. Sunny struggles with his injuries and with doctors saying he should never drive again.
The movie returns to the present with Sonny winning the Daytona and getting an offer from his old friend Ruben Cervantes, who owns a failing F1 team called the APXGP. Ruben’s team hadn’t won a race and faces termination. He convinces Sonny to come out of retirement, not knowing the serious nature of Sonny’s prior injuries.
The movie introduces Joshua Pearce as the cocky young driver, similar to Sonny in his youth. Joshua and Sonny become rivals even though they are supposed to be a team. At the start, Joshua didn’t respect or trust Sonny and his previous expertise, but when he saw what happened to Sonny earlier in his career, his attitude changes.
They begin to work together at the big Monsoon Race where, of course, a crash happens because of risky maneuvering. The two figure out their relationship as they work together, strengthening their bond and holding each other accountable for their racing. In the end, they become a better team and better friends.
Sunny joined APXGP because he wanted to bring out that spark in his life again, but he wasn’t considerate of Joshua at the start. Similarly, Joshua’s early hatred for Sonny stemmed from his fear of being kicked off the team.
Sonny had no intention of doing this. He was only trying to help the team and his friend Ruben win the race. Joshua’s character starts as a cocky and arrogant driver, but with Sonny’s help, he matures into a successful professional.
This movie wasn’t just a hit, it blew my expectations out of the park. Critics praised it for its technical execution and immersive racing scenes filmed during real Grand Prix races.
The character growth is also a highlight. The collision of Sonny and Joshua’s complex personalities makes this movie a huge success, and I would recommend everyone who likes action or just likes amazing storytelling.
